Middlesbrough Safeguarding Children Board (MSCB) has signed up to an innovative way to undertake child protection training aimed at staff and volunteers in organisations who have contact with children.

What is E Learning?
Each module has a number of interactive learning screens, learner challenges, tracking and online assessment. There is a certificate available for successful applicants. The training takes approximately two hours to complete some people will do it more quickly and others will take longer. You can do it in stages and save your work.

To be eligible you must work, paid or voluntary, within the Middlesbrough area or the Redcar & Cleveland area.
Currently these Safeguarding programmes are free of charge to applicants working for MSCB member organisations or not for profit agencies.
The training is hosted by the Virtual College, one of the UK's leading e-learning colleges who have worked closely with Local Safeguarding Children Boards to develop the courses.
There are nine modules available. It is recommended that you complete one module in basic child protection awareness (numbers 1-3) before progressing to the more specific modules (numbers 4-9)
1. Awareness in Child Abuse and Neglect Core Module
This module is suitable for:
- Those who work directly with children, young people, parents/carers
- Those with particular responsibility for safeguarding children
2. Introduction to Safeguarding Children Module
This module is suitable for those who may have contact with children, young people, parents or carers
3. Awareness in Child Abuse & Neglect Foundation Module
This module is suitable for those who may have contact with children, young people, parents/carers but do not work directly with them.
4. Awareness in Child Abuse and Neglect Young People
This module is suitable for those who work directly with young people aged 12-18 years of age
5. Awareness in Child Abuse and Neglect Young Police Module
This module is suitable for Police staff working on Teesside.
6. Hidden Harm-the effects of parental substance abuse
This module is suitable for anyone working with families, particularly where there is a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
7. Safeguarding Children with Disabilities
This module is suitable for anyone working with children with disabilities or additional needs.
8. Domestic Violence
This module is suitable for all staff, raising awareness about domestic violence and the impact upon children.
9. E-safety
This module is suitable for all staff, particularly those in contact with children & young people
Learning outcomes include:
- Understanding the various types of abuse or neglect
- Identify the signs of abuse and what to look for
- Know how to ask questions if you suspect a child is being abused
- What to do if you suspect abuse or deliberate harm to a child
- Understand what happens after a referral to Social Services is made
- Understand the importance of keeping records

Accreditation
The content of this course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines
Certification
When you successfully complete your course and quiz, you will be able to print out your own certificate.
Duration
Introduction to Safeguarding Children approximately 45 minutes.
Core and Foundation modules - Approximately 2 hours.
The length of time taken depends entirely on how quickly you can study and absorb the material. You can proceed as quickly or slowly as you like. You can do it in stages and save your work.
Once completed you can revisit the module at any time to refresh your knowledge, however this will not be recorded and you will not be issued with another certificate. To obtain this evidence of CPD you will be required to re-register and be issued with new login details.
Please note that you must complete the e-learning module within 12 weeks of receiving your login details or your agency may incur £10 administration costs.

ECPAT UK Child Trafficking Training
ECPAT UK stands for End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes. They are a leading children's rights organisation campaigning against the commercial sexual exploitation of children in the UK and on its international aspects. In particular, we focus on the protection of trafficked children and children exploited in tourism and the prevention of such crimes.
Free Online Training
ECPAT UK have produced a free-learning package around child trafficking, that can be used individually, in small groups or during training sessions. To use the e-tool you will need to register first via the link below.
