Cut your Council Tax

You may qualify for help to reduce your Council Tax bill if:

  • You are on a low income – Council Tax benefit could reduce your bill by 100%
  • You live with another adult who is not your spouse or partner and they have a low gross income each week, regardless of your own income you may qualify for a ‘Second Adult Rebate’

Alternatively, other reductions can apply if:

  • You live alone – you can claim a single person discount which reduces your bill by 25%
  • You are a full-time student, carer or apprentice
  • You or someone who lives with you is disabled and you have special facilities in your home

Even if you do not qualify for help you can spread the cost of your Council Tax by paying by direct debit.  Call 01642 726007.

Need help paying the rent?

You can visit the Benefit Section of the website in order to find out if you qualify for Housing Benefit, which helps towards your rent. The amount of any benefit you are entitled to will depend on your household income and circumstances.

Struggling with debts or mortgage repayments?

The Council’s Money Advice Service can help with advice and assistance on mortgages, including: negotiating with the mortgage lender and representing in court. Money Advice can also help eligible clients under the Mortgage Rescue Scheme, which is designed to prevent some of the most vulnerable families losing their homes.

 Check if you can apply for tax credits

You can qualify for extra cash even if you’re in work by applying for tax credits.

There are two types of Tax Credit:

Child Tax Credit
Working Tax Credit


You do not have to have children to qualify for Working Tax Credit

If you work and pay for childcare you may be able to get tax credits to help with the costs

Say no to doorstep lenders, say yes to Credit Unions

Credit unions are available to anyone living or working in Middlesbrough. They offer easy access to saving facilities. Members who qualify can apply for loans at extremely low interest rates.

This government-funded regional project is attached to Trading Standards and provides free and confidential advice to tackle the problem of loan sharks and help their victims.

Need help with business rates?

A property with a rateable value of less than £15,000 may be eligible for Small Business Rates Relief
Empty properties are eligible for mandatory rate relief of either 50% or 100% depending on the property description.
