Food safety
The Food and Safety Team aims to protect and improve public health and safety by promoting good hygiene standards and safe working practices.
Food Safety Officers make unannounced visits to food businesses to check hygiene standards, look at how food is handled and how well premises are being managed. Advice and guidance on good hygiene practices is given on how to make improvements to benefit the business and reduce risks to consumers.
Our Business Guide gives a summary of the food and safety laws that apply to food businesses. Details of our service standards and enforcement policy are also included. Click here to take a look at the Business Guide.
We also give advice and guidance to consumers to help them make an informed choice about the food they buy and the places where they eat.
Our Food Hygiene Award scheme gives consumers information on the standards of hygiene found in Middlesbrough's food businesses. Copies of our food business inspection reports are freely available under freedom of information laws.
