Homelessness

The Homelessness and Housing Advice service is operated by Erimus Housing on behalf of Middlesbrough Council. The Council remains responsible for assisting homeless households and monitors the service on an ongoing basis.

Erimus Housing's Homeless Prevention Officers provide housing advice and assistance to residents of Middlesbrough who are homeless or have another housing need. They assist people by trying to resolve the issues causing the housing need or homelessness, and prevent households from becoming homeless where possible. This is done using a number of methods, including:

  • assisting victims of domestic violence to either find suitable alternative accommodation or helping them to remain living in their current home if this is their wish and it is safe for them to do so
  • negotiating with landlords if there are rent arrears or other tenancy issues to try and keep the household in their current property
  • discussing alternative accommodation options with family members where a young person has been asked to leave the family home
  • negotiating with mortgage lenders to try to prevent repossession proceedings
  • assisting clients with finding accommodation in the private rented sector
  • assisting clients to bid on suitable properties on the sub-regional choice based lettings scheme
  • giving advice on a range of housing options and housing providers
