An apprenticeship is a paid job with training to achieve a recognised qualification. By combining work and study, apprenticeships provide the opportunity to gain experience, develop new skills and earn whilst learning.

Management

 

There are three different levels of training available:

  • Pre-apprenticeships - see Learning Works leaflet for Foundation Learning information
  • Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship (equivalent to GCSE standards)
  • Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship (equivalent to A–Level standards)

Entry Requirements

Entry to an apprenticeship programme is subject to an interview and the ability to achieve the required level of Maths and English.

Course Content

Apprenticeships consist of:

  • Competence based qualification (Diploma / NVQ Level 2/3)
  • Key Skills/Functional Skills
  • Knowledge Based Qualification
  • Employer Rights and Responsibilities
  • Sector specific qualifications

Programme Length

Apprenticeship programmes can take between 12 – 24 months to complete.

Pay

Apprentices are entitled to a minimum wage rate of £2.50 per hour, however many employers pay above this rate.

Training and Assessment

Assessments are ongoing throughout the programme. Apprentices are required to submit a portfolio of work-based evidence and undertake relevant tests.

Reviews

Every 10 -12 weeks, a review will take place to assess the progress made and identify any additional support requirements. The people involved in the reviews will be: the apprentice, the manager or mentor and the assessor.

Progression

Upon completion of an apprenticeship learners can progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship, which can provide a route to Higher Education (HE) studies such as Level 4 Higher National Certificate, or Foundation Degree.
