The Dorman Museum houses the history of the region's geological, social and industrial heritage. The museum opened to the public in 1904, and reopened on the 1st March 2003 after a 3 year redevelopment programme. The museum has 8 permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions, on-site collection store, resources room, education suite and cafe. We use our anthropology, natural and social history collections to lead our programme of regular events aimed at all ages and abilities.
The Dorman Museum is fully accessible, winning the ADAPT Award for Access in 2003.
The re-development was supported by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund, One NorthEast, English Partnerships, Northern Electric, British Steel, Teesside TEC and North East Museums, Libraries & Archives Council.
