Allotments
Allotment gardening is a creative and enjoyable leisure activity which all the family can take part in at a low cost. Benefits include the satisfaction of growing your own fresh food in a chemical free environment, perhaps in an organic, natural way. This is food that you have grown yourself, fresh from your plot and that hasn't had to travel thousands of miles before it reaches your plate.
Vegetables from your plot are high in fibre, good for the digestive system and an important source of vitamins and minerals.
Allotment tenants also benefit from fresh air and plenty of exercise.
Middlesbrough has eight allotment sites they are located at Saltersgill, Berwick Hills, Whitehouse, Beechwood, Town Farm, Letitia Street Newport, Hemlington and Coulby Newham.
Tenants generally grow a variety of vegetables for family consumption in an organically friendly manner. The plot can also be used to grow flowers, herbs and fruit and some plots are available for poultry and pigeons.
All sites have a substantial waiting list (up to 2 years). Anyone interested in getting onto a waiting list should complete an application form please phone 300508 to have one sent out, or download a copy from the link in the 'downloads', section of this page and return to:
