Water Vole

Middlesbrough is an urban borough yet it has some green gems where you can experience the natural world. Middlesbrough has three Local Nature Reserves and 17 sites of nature conservation importance.
Middlesbrough Council is working in partnership with other agencies, organisations and community groups to conserve and enhance Middlesbrough's natural assets.

The water vole is Middlesbrough's "star" species. This nationally declining mammal is thriving in Middlesbrough's becks. This shy and secretive creature is expanding its range in Middlesbrough due to sensitive beck management carried out by Middlesbrough Council, the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency.
