Exercise referral schemes

GAP - Get Active on Prescription GP Exercise Referral Scheme

What is GAP?

Get Active on Prescription is a 12 week supervised physical activity programme suitable for people with a wide range of medical conditions. The scheme is delivered by Middlesbrough Council Sport and Leisure, using staff with related qualifications. If you have a health condition that could be benefited by exercise, but feel mainstream sessions may be too strenuous for your needs, then a GAP course could be for you.

How do I get involved in GAP?
You need to be referred by your GP or Practice Nurse to take part in GAP sessions. Talk to them about the interest that you have in becoming more active to support your condition. They should discuss the appropriateness of the scheme with you. Once the GP refers you, we will contact you to give you more information and a start date for your programme.

What activity would I do?
The programmes are tailored to support your needs, but may include activities such as walking, gym inductions and gym based activity, swimming, multi-exercise sessions and games. Don’t worry, instructors realise that everyone may be nervous and that most people may not have exercised for a very long time. You don’t have to participate in every activity on offer at your chosen centre, just those activities that are appropriate for you and that you feel comfortable with. There is no activity in the first session so you get a chance to see the venue, meet your instructor and group and ask any questions that you have.

Where can I do GAP?
There are five venues across Middlesbrough that offer the programme. You can choose one that suits you in terms of location, time of sessions, and range of activity available.
