CCTV and surveillance

A range of crime prevention measures are used to improve the security and safety of neighbourhoods in Middlesbrough, including CCTV cameras.

Closed circuit television (CCTV)

The cameras are used to proactively capture and share evidence and intelligence which identifies offenders and makes neighbourhoods safer and stronger. Communication systems between the police, Street Wardens, shop security, and licensed premises door staff are connected in order to share information and benefit the community. Evidence can also be used to support criminal and civil prosecutions.

We monitor our CCTV cameras 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. View a list of all CCTV camera locations.

Requesting CCTV footage

All data from the CCTV system is centrally recorded and stored for 28 days. To request a copy of CCTV footage of yourself or someone you have legal authority to represent, you'll need to make a Subject Access Request. Find out how to make a Subject Access Request.

If you work for an organisation and want to request the disclosure of CCTV footage containing personal data under a specified exemption - for example for 'crime and taxation purposes', 'in connection with legal proceedings', or 'immigration purposes', you can find out how to do so on the request for disclosure of personal data page.

Talking cameras

Talking cameras allow CCTV operators to interact with the public to immediately challenge those responsible for committing environmental crimes such as littering, fly tipping, and graffiti, with the aim of improving the cleanliness of the streets and reducing the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. The voice camera system can also be used for emergency and/or public information transmissions.

Our CCTV control room

Our CCTV control room and surveillance operators have achieved the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) Gold standard. NSI approval is given for technical expertise and quality service.

Safer shopping

Middlesbrough has been accredited with the Home Office Safer Shopping Scheme since 2002. The scheme delivers a partnership-managed and co-ordinated system through the use of radio links, CCTV, intelligence gathering and dissemination, information and photograph sharing, and other initiatives.
