My Town Hall Assistant

Do you like talking to people and promoting projects?

Would you like to help families take part in simple activities to help them understand the Town Hall Refurbishment and Renovation Project during closure?  

If you'd like working with a team and having fun while also representing the Town Hall at local events, then this opportunity could be for you.

We're looking for volunteers to assist in running the ‘My Town Hall’ (MTH) space/exhibits promoting Middlesbrough Town Hall. 

The type of events you'd be attending could include Middlesbrough Mela, the Cleveland Show, family fun days at Community Hubs, and the Town Meal.

You may also like to help with pop-up exhibitions in other locations on occasions. ‘My Town Hall’ is part of the wider programme to engage the general public in the heritage and restoration of Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Essential: Interpersonal and communication skills, enthusiasm, ability to give instructions and run a simple activity.

Desirable: Some knowledge of Middlesbrough's heritage, teaching and craft skills, flexibility.

Documentation Assistant

We are looking for volunteers to assist in documenting the redevelopment process and physical works for the restoration and refurbishment of Middlesbrough Town Hall. This documentation will feed into social media and local press as part of the wider programme to engage the general public in the restoration of the Town Hall. You will assist in photographing and filming the refurbishment progress for the duration of the project, while helping to monitor and maintain social media.

What are we looking for?

Volunteers will need basic technical skills in photography, filming, digital and social media. We will assume that volunteers are familiar with the use of their own camera.

Volunteers are asked to give a minimum of 7 days to the project, over a 16 month period.

Practical considerations:

Documentation Assistants will be expected to attend basic Town Hall Volunteer training before undertaking this role.

Supervision will be provided by the Project Manager. Additional skill support may be available if appropriate.

Local History Researcher

We are seeking Local History Researchers to research the heritage of Middlesbrough Town Hall, including the Carriage Driveway, Victorian Courtroom and the Old Fire Station.

This research will feed into the wider programme to engage the general public in the redevelopment process and physical works for the restoration and refurbishment of Middlesbrough Town Hall.

Research will cover:

  • the original concepts and design for the building and its role in the civic and democratic development of Middlesbrough alongside the town’s economic development
  • the past cultural programme, including the classical music concert series and as a venue for emerging popular bands in the 1980s and 1990s

What are we looking for?

You will need to have an interest in local history and preferably some experience of using local history records.  A good level of written skills is necessary as short reports will be needed.

Volunteers are asked to give 1-2 days a week as available.

Practical considerations:

You will be expected to attend basic Town Hall Volunteer training before undertaking this role.

Local History Researchers will need to commit to one day’s training at Teesside Archives, and then give further time to explore negotiated lines of research that interest you.  Support will be provided by Teesside Archives and the Project Manager.

Oral History Collector

We are looking for volunteers to work with a heritage and media professional to collect people’s personal memories of Middlesbrough Town Hall using digital technology.

These contributed memories will feed into social media and local press as part of the wider programme to engage the general public in the restoration of the Town Hall.

What are we looking for?

Volunteers will need to have good interpersonal and basic IT skills. Previous experience of collecting Oral History would be desirable.

Volunteers will need to allocate time to training in the collection of oral histories.  During the project’s lifetime of 16 months, each volunteer will asked to give 8 days to the project.

Practical considerations:

You will be expected to attend basic Town Hall Volunteer training before undertaking this role.

Oral History Collectors will receive training in the collection of Oral History.  Supervision and support will be provided by the Project Manager.
