Ways to Work is an exciting new programme designed to support learners to gain the skills necessary to find and retain employment. It is aimed at learners who need support with their spoken or written English or with maths. Some of our learners do not speak English as a first language whilst others are native English speakers who need to improve their English and maths skills.
Ways to Work learners attend an intensive two week induction/assessment course. On this course, learners identify their strengths and areas for improvement and the steps they need to take to move nearer to the jobs market. Further courses enable learners to work on these skills, improve their confidence and work readiness and move on to employment, voluntary work, an apprenticeship or a college course. Every Ways to Work learner has an individualised programme and the support of a trained advisor throughout their time on the programme.
Volunteers are needed to work with Ways to Work learners either in groups or individually, supporting them to improve their English or maths skills and complementing their main programme of study. Three roles are available:
Classroom support assistants work under the guidance of the class teacher to support individuals or small groups of learners on their main programme.
Group leaders work with groups, planning and delivering ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), English or maths activities to help learners improve their skills.
Supporters work with learners on a more informal basis, providing ESOL, English or maths support to individuals or small groups.
The work could include meeting learners in cafes, community centres or libraries and organising trips to museums or other places of interest.
Full training and support is available.
