New CCTV sees fly-tipper fined for dumping rubbish in alleyway

A blatant fly-tip in broad daylight has landed the culprit with a court fine.

The offender was caught on CCTV dumping the item in the alley behind his own street in Middlesbrough.

Appearing before Teesside Magistrates, Andre Zaromba pleaded guilty to fly-tipping and was fined £120 and ordered to pay court costs of £200.

Zaromba had failed to attend a previous hearing and was brought to court on a bench warrant.

The court heard how the 31-year-old, of Kensington Road, was caught on camera dumping a baby bouncer in the alley behind his home in March this year.

The alleyway had previously made headlines after a major clean-up operation was needed to clear up several tonnes of fly-tipped waste, with CCTV installed as a deterrent.

Since the installation of CCTV eight offenders have been caught with seven paying the resulting Fixed Penalty Notices.

The latest incident has sparked renewed calls for the public to dispose of waste legally and responsibly, rather than leaving Council Tax payers to foot the bill for expensive clean-up operations.

Residents are also urged to take responsibility for their own neighbourhoods and report the fly-tippers as part of an ongoing town-wide drive to stamp out the problem.

Councillor Janet Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Community Safety, said: “Fly-tipping is selfish and unnecessary, and can leave those responsible out of pocket and with a criminal record.

“It blights neighbourhoods and communities, and is a drain on scarce resources which could be put to better use elsewhere.

“We will use all methods at our disposal to catch those responsible and put them before the courts on behalf of law-abiding residents.”

Anyone with information on fly-tipping can send details to evidence@middlesbrough.gov.uk or call the Contact Centre on 01642 726001.

Fly-tipping, anti-social behaviour and many other offences can also be reported online at www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/report

Residents can also book online to dispose of large items at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Haverton Hill.

There is no charge for residents but fees apply for businesses.
