Volunteers are needed to play a special role in two of the biggest events on Middlesbrough's cultural calendar.

The team of Street Ambassadors will provide the warmest of Middlesbrough welcomes to Radio 1's Big Weekend and the Take That gig at the Riverside Stadium.

They'll be a key first point of contact, offering advice and guidance as tens of thousands of visitors arrive for some of the biggest events in the borough's history.

More than 60,000 music fans are expected to flock to Stewart Park for the Big Weekend on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26, from as far afield as the Channel Islands and Shetland.

Middlesbrough Council and the Tees Valley Combined Authority are running a joint programme to recruit up to 60 volunteers from across the region for this unique opportunity - and the deadline for applications is Friday, May 17.

Street Ambassadors will provide a daily presence around key areas of the town centre, welcoming visitors and offering advice on places to visit.

Applicants will be invited to attend a Street Ambassador welcome session where they will be given training.

Volunteers who contribute a day or more as a Street Ambassador will also be rewarded with tickets to see local shows or events.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: "Two massive concerts happening in Middlesbrough is fantastic news and gives us an incredible opportunity to become known as a hugely energetic and positive place.

"Thousands of visitors will flock here to the events and we all want them to enjoy the very warmest of Middlesbrough welcomes and a have an unforgettable experience.

"Our volunteer Street Ambassadors will be the friendly faces that greet visitors, help them out and promote Middlesbrough as the most positive and ambitious place in the UK."

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: "It's hard to overstate how huge the Big Weekend and Take That will be for Middlesbrough, bringing visitors from far and wide meaning more people spending time and money in our town.

"If you want to be part of the action and help make memories for thousands of people, I'd urge you to sign up as a Street Ambassador and do us proud."

Volunteers will be needed from 9am to 3pm on both days of the Big Weekend and from 11am to 6pm for the Take That concert - times are subject to change.
