To provide valuable maintenance skills and support to residents of Middlesbrough, community groups, and local businesses to allow easy access to cycling and to assist in making cycling a sustainable form of transport.
Training and services
The Bike Academy is the training hub of Middlesbrough Cycle Centre. It runs alongside the Cycle Centre, ensuring ease of access to the training and support services.
Several services are offered at the Bike Academy:
The courses delivered regularly at the Bike Academy cover the basic maintenance of a bike and are accredited by the Open College Network. The courses are available upon request and delivery can be tailored to suit individual needs.
The Academy also offers industry recognised Velotech training courses up to Gold standard. These courses cover the more technical side of cycle maintenance and are useful for those that are interested in a career in the cycle industry. The Velotech course is delivered in stages so can also be useful for those that wish to gain further knowledge regarding cycle maintenance.
The Bike Academy offers Cycle Recycle courses for local people. They are open to anyone, although places are limited. Participants on Cycle Recycle work on the restoration of a redundant bicycle to enable it to be re-used. Through the project, they learn how to fix common faults and how to ride safely. At the end of the program, the participants are able to keep the bicycle they've been working on and also receive an OCN Level 1 award in Cycle Maintenance.
The Bike Academy delivers Dr Bike sessions in the community where small repairs and maintenance can be carried out. These sessions are useful for workplace enrichments and community events as they assist users in maintaining their bike to allow continued use. Cycle safety checks are also carried out along with maintenance demonstrations.
