Self-build and custom housebuilding

Middlesbrough Council is required to keep a register of people who are interested in self-build or custom build projects in Middlesbrough, in line with the Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015.

The register helps to understand the level of demand for self-build or custom build plots, and enables us to consider the future need for this type of housing, where people would like their plot to be, and the type of house that they would like to build. Please note registration does not guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified, or become available.

  • Self-build housing usually means you're directly involved in organising the design and construction of your new home
  • Custom build usually means working with a specialist developer to help you deliver your home

To register your interest for a custom or self-build plot please complete the self and custom build registration form then either send it via email to or by post to: Planning Policy, Middlesbrough Council, PO Box 504, Civic Centre, Middlesbrough, TS1 9FY.

More information can be found through the Self Build Portal.
