No Fear

We spoke to local women to find out what the barriers were to attending cervical screening. One of the biggest factors was fear and embarrassment, alongside struggling to get appointments that fit alongside our busy routines. You told us and we listened. As part of our local campaign we've implemented the following:

No Fear practices

  • A number of GP practices across Middlesbrough are signed up as No Fear practices, promoting the services they offer to make cervical screening less daunting for women - things like being able to request a female to carry out the test, taking a friend along for support, and booking a back-to-back buddy appointment so you can go along with a friend to share childcare or transport
  • Over the coming year we're working to roll the No Fear approach out to more practices across the South Tees area

No Fear sexual health service

  • We've worked with Virgincare, the local sexual health service, who offer cervical screening appointments as an alternative to GP practices, to promote the No Fear service at all sexual health venues across Teesside

Out of hours appointments

  • Cervical screening appointments are now available on evenings and weekends at the out of hours GP hubs across the South Tees area. These appointments are booked via your own GP, with a choice of four locations - North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, Redcar, and Brotton
