Cooling towers and legionnaires' disease

If your premises has, or operates, a cooling tower or evaporative condenser, it must be registered with us.

You can register your cooling tower online via GOV.UK.

If you already have a cooling tower, you can tell us about a change to your existing registration.

We keep a list of registered cooling towers so we can identify potential sources of legionnaires' disease. It also allows us to easily identify, monitor, and inspect cooling towers in Middlesbrough.

Once you've registered your cooling tower, you can commission your equipment without needing our consent or approval.

If you'd like to discuss cooling tower registration, or let us know about concerns about cooling towers or evaporative condensers, contact the Environmental Health team by calling 01642 726001 or emailing EHTS@middlesbrough.gov.uk.

You can get more information about legionnaires' disease and your responsibilities as a business on the Health and Safety Executive website.
