Privacy notice - Community Safety
Who are we and what do we do?
Middlesbrough Council work in collaboration with other partners to reduce crime and disorder through tackling issues such as anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol misuse, re-offending and the fear of crime.
What type of personal data do we collect and how do we collect it
To deliver community safety services we may collect personal information about you including:
- Name
- Address
- Date of birth
- Gender
- CCTV footage
- Lifestyle and social circumstances
- Behaviour
- Housing tenure and tenancy information
We may collect special category information about you including:
- Health
- Race, ethnicity or nationality
- Religion, faith or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Disability
Further to the personal and special category information, some of the information collected will include Criminal convictions and offences
We may collect your Personal Data in a number of ways, for example:
- Information provided by yourself
- Information provided by partner organisations
- Through the Criminal Justice System
How the Law allows us to use your personal data
The lawful basis that allows us to process your personal information are:

What is your personal data used for?
In order to undertake our community safety functions we process personal information for:
- The prevention, detection and investigation of crime and disorder
- The prevention and detection of terrorism
- The instigation of legal proceedings
- Safeguarding
Will your personal data be shared?
We may collect from and share your information with Police, Probation Service, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Crown Prosecution Service and the Courts, Government Departments including Ministry of Justice, fire brigade, health bodies, local support services including voluntary and community sector, and other Council services including public health, housing, children’s social care, adult social care, Supporting Families, South Tees Youth Justice Service, and public protection.
How do we keep your personal data secure?
The security of your personal information is important to us. This is why we follow a range of security policies and procedures to control and safeguard access to and use of your personal information.
Examples of our security include:
- Encryption, meaning that information is hidden so that it cannot be read without special knowledge (such as a password).
- Controlling access to systems and networks allows us to stop people who are not allowed to view your personal information from getting access to it
- Training for our staff allows us to make them aware of how to handle information and how and when to report when something goes wrong
- Regular testing of our technology and ways of working including keeping up to date on the latest security updates (commonly called patches)
How long will we keep your personal data?
Personal information is retained in accordance with the Council’s published Corporate Retention Schedule and other legal obligations.
Is your personal data processed overseas?
Information will be processed within the EEA and will not be shared with overseas recipients.
Marketing
Community Safety will not market to you.
What are your information rights?
Your Information Rights are set out in law and, subject to some exceptions, you have the:
- Right to rectification - to ask for information to be corrected
- Right to erasure - to have your personal data deleted
- Right to object - to how your data is used
- Right to restriction - to request limits on how your data is used
- Right to portability - to request that we move your data to another organisation
- Right of subject access - to request a copy of data the Council holds about you
