A polling station at Northern Road in Whinney Banks

The result of the Ayresome ward by-election held on Thursday, August 17 in Middlesbrough has been announced.

Independent candidate Jackie Young was elected to Middlesbrough Council with 318 votes.

The by-election was held after former Labour Councillor Antony High resigned in June.

The full results were:

Jackie Young (Independent) – 318

Mick Thompson (Labour) – 294

Claire Brent (Lib Dem) – 201

Matthew Harris (Green Party) – 32

Sajid Hussain (Conservative) – 30

Jon Rathmell (Independent) - 5

Three ballot papers were rejected. The 880 votes cast represented a 20.9% turnout from an electorate of 4,224.
