Construction work is under way as the modernisation of Middlesbrough’s Central Library continues.
The £2m redevelopment will see captivating spaces created where children can read, play and explore.
The major works at the Grade II listed building will also protect the unique features of the reference library.
Work to clear the library started in January, with further surveys and other preparations taking place in the meantime.
North East firm Aptus has now been appointed to lead the building works, which are expected to be completed by March 2025.
Middlesbrough Cultural Partnership and Middlesbrough Council successfully bid for the funding for the works from the government’s Cultural Development Fund. The partnership is aiming to make Middlesbrough the most creative town in the UK.
The investment has been backed by Mayor Chris Cooke and contributes to the Council’s priority to make Middlesbrough a successful and ambitious town.
Mayor Cooke said: “The plans for Central Library are bold and exciting and this modernisation will give people another reason to visit the town centre.
“Arts and culture has a massive role to play in the future of Middlesbrough and this project is just one building block of a wider plan to attract visitors for a whole range of different reasons.”
Cllr Janet Thompson, Executive member with responsibility for libraries, said: “Central Library is a beautiful building in the heart of our town and these improvements will help to draw more visitors and make it a more welcoming environment for families.”
Aptus Managing Director Chris Price said: “We are delighted to be supporting Middlesbrough Council and the local community, particularly its young residents, on the refurbishment and development of this iconic, Grade II listed library. We look forward to sharing our progress as this building is restored to its full potential.”
Middlesbrough was awarded a total of £4.25m from the Cultural Development Fund. MIMA, the railway station and The Auxiliary gallery and performance space will also benefit.
