Diwali in Centre Square

One of the highlights of Middlesbrough’s cultural calendar is less than a month away.

Diwali returns for 2024 on Saturday, November 2 and there really is something for all the family to enjoy.

Also known as the Festival of Light, Diwali will be delivered by the team behind this year’s hugely successful Middlesbrough Mela.

Kicking off at noon in Centre Square, the free family fun event features live music and dance along with mouth-watering street food, children’s activities, a fun fair and a Bollywood-themed firework finale.

Diwali is one of the major festivals mainly celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all over the world.

Every year communities celebrate the five-day Festival of Light which represents the triumph of good over evil.

Middlesbrough Diwali producer Kash Patel, said: “We launched Diwali in Middlesbrough a couple of years ago as a response to coming out of lockdown as we felt it was quite a fitting representation of the victory of light over darkness.

“And if last year is anything to go by then we can look forward to thousands of people descending on Centre Square to join in this year’s party atmosphere.

“It is a true reflection of Middlesbrough’s diverse community spirit, and one that continues to go from strength to strength.

“There really is something for everybody regardless of age, gender, social or religious background, whether that’s taking part in the various workshops and activities, shopping in the stall bazaar or simply being entertained by the acts on the main stage.

“It’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy a free day out - and who doesn’t love fireworks?”

Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough Deputy Mayor and Executive member for Culture & Communities, said: “Diwali is a magical time for many in our town, and everyone is invited to this year’s event.

“To be able to come together in one central place and join in the celebrations as a town is fantastic.

“It’s a brilliant example of Middlesbrough’s amazing diversity and community cohesion, and one that puts us on a par with other major cities that host similar celebrations.”

Middlesbrough Diwali 2024 takes place in Centre Square on Saturday, November 2 from noon to 6pm.

The event is free for all to attend and tickets are not required.

Stall bookings are still available for this year’s event – interested traders and exhibitors should call 07776 210066 for more information.
