The gym at Middlesbrough Sport Village

Leisure centres in Middlesbrough will host an open event this weekend to celebrate a recent £1.1m investment.

A raft of free activities will be on offer on Saturday and Sunday, January 27 and 28.

It comes on the back of state-of-the-art gym refurbishments at Middlesbrough Sports Village, Neptune Centre, Rainbow Leisure Centre and Eston Leisure Centre towards the end of last year.

Guisborough Swim and Fitness Centre also benefitted from a raft of updated equipment.

All of these centres – run by leading operator Everyone Active in partnership with Middlesbrough Council and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council – are taking part in the open day, as are Redcar Leisure Centre, Saltburn Leisure Centre and Loftus Leisure Centre.

Among the activities taking place will be:

  • Middlesbrough Sports Village: Mark Proctor Soccer Academy, assault course, Omnia taster sessions, user group demonstrations
  • Neptune Centre: Selected free family swims, selected free sauna sessions, free dance class trials, cake stall for Dementia UK
  • Rainbow Leisure Centre: Selected free badminton, squash and family swim sessions, free swimming lesson trials, Dementia UK fundraising
  • Guisborough Swim and Fitness Centre: Free swimming session and swim lesson tasters, personal training tasters, aqua fit tasters
  • Redcar Leisure Centre: Free table tennis, badminton and basketball, FlowRider tasters, fitness tasters, group displays
  • Saltburn Leisure Centre: Indoor bowls tasters, free bouncy castle, group exercise classes, family fun and floats
  • Loftus Leisure Centre: Free public swimming and inflatable sessions, free adult and child swimming lesson tasters
  • Eston Leisure Centre: Penalty shootout with Bee Active, kids’ disco, group displays, fundraising for Zoe’s Place (all these activities on Sunday only)

Paul Ayre, Everyone Active’s area contract manager, said: “This open weekend will be the perfect way to celebrate the recent £1.1million investment in gym refurbishments, which will benefit local communities for years to come.

“There are a wide range of activities on offer across sites and we encourage the public to come down and see the fantastic facilities on their doorstep.

“We cannot wait to welcome everyone and show them that there is an activity for them, regardless of their age, interests or ability.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: “My vision is to make Middlesbrough healthier, safer and more ambitious. This refurbishment is one step closer to achieving that.

“Our gyms and leisure centres are incredibly important to the people of Middlesbrough and I’m delighted that they've been upgraded to help our residents stay fit and healthy.

“These free activities will show off our venues and hopefully attract new people to visit and maybe learn a new skill.”
