The size and make-up of some Middlesbrough Council wards could change, according to new proposals.

The Local Government Boundary Commission wants the views of Middlesbrough residents and organisations on its proposed changes.

The authority would still have 46 councillors representing all areas of the borough.

But current boundary lines could change in many areas to ensure that each councillor represents roughly the same number of residents.

Some of the proposed changes include Marton Manor moving into the Marton East ward, while two councillors would represent the Stainton ward, as housing developments have increased the population in the south west of the town.

The names of some wards could also change – for example, what’s currently the Ayresome ward would see its name change to Acklam West and Whinney Banks, while a large proportion of what’s currently known as the Park ward would become Linthorpe East.

Launching the consultation Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We want people in Middlesbrough to help us. We have drawn up proposals for new wards in Middlesbrough.

“We want to make sure these new electoral arrangements reflect communities. We also want them to be easy to understand and convenient for local people.

“Residents and local organisations can help us do that. We would like them to let us know whether they agree with our proposals before we take final decisions.”

It’s easy to get involved. The Commission has a dedicated section on its website where people can see details of the proposals and comment on the names of wards and their boundaries.

People can also give their views by e-mail, and by post to:
