Special Education Needs

Hearing Impaired Service

The Hearing Impaired Service is are a team of specialist teachers, known as teachers of the deaf, who provide support for children aged 0-19, with a diagnosed hearing loss.

The services works across the Tees Valley area, covering the boroughs of Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool and Stockton.

Often, children with hearing loss face challenges in school linked to language development and access to the curriculum. As there is a relatively low incidence of hearing loss, many teachers and other professionals have little experience of how best to provide support. A teacher of the deaf helps to support professionals, as well as working individually with children.

Support and development

A range of support is offered by the Hearing Impaired Service and varies according to the individual needs of each child. It can range from an occasional school visit to monitor progress, to weekly teaching visits at home or school.

Support offered to individual children and families includes:

  • Pre-school visiting at home and in nursery
  • Information about local support groups
  • Individual support to children in mainstream and special schools
  • Support and advice for parents and teachers
  • Liaison with other professionals including audiologists, social workers, speech and language therapists
  • Support to learn sign language in the early years
  • Deaf Awareness training
  • Provision and maintenance of specialist equipment in school

Children can be referred to the Hearing impaired Service by ENT consultants or paediatric audiologists. Parents who are concerned about their child’s hearing should visit their GP to request a hearing test.
