Windward Way link

Background

The section of proposed link road is within the Middlehaven area which has seen, and continues to see, considerable redevelopment.

The works proposed as part of this scheme are an individual element of wider future transport improvement works assisting with the regeneration of the Middlehaven area. The aim of these works will be to improve accessibility through the Middlehaven area by all modes of transport.

The successful delivery of the Dock Bridge/Priestman Road has provided a key east/west route to the north of the Middlehaven area, which links the Newport interchange to the Middlehaven interchange.

Proposed scheme

The proposed Windward Way link provides a further east/west strategic link to the South of Middlehaven. Supporting works as part of the proposals will provide dedicated pedestrian and cycle facilities which will support mode shift and improve safety, particularly around Middlesbrough College.

The scheme proposals will provide a 6.7m width carriageway which links Windward Way to Lower Feversham Street.

A signalised pedestrian cycle crossing facility (toucan) will be provided at the junction of Windward Way/Dock Street.

The new Windward Way link will continue along Lower Feversham Street and terminate at a new 3 arm signal controlled junction at Lower Feversham Street/Cleveland Street which will incorporate pedestrian cycle (toucan) facilities.

A new shared pedestrian/cycle facility will be provided to the north side of the new link, between the proposed signalised crossings, which will link existing facilities on Windward Way through to Cleveland Street.

Works will be undertaken to widen Redcar Street to provide access for businesses/sites on Lower Gosford Street and the surrounding locality.

Scheme benefits

The works will provide new pedestrian cycle facilities with associated signalised crossing facilities improving accessibility by non-car modes and safety for these highway users.

Dedicated traffic free routes will be provided which will link the rail station to Middlesbrough College and future development opportunities creating a high quality environment and improving linkages between the town and Middlehaven regeneration area.
